Summary of this months report -
Both international visitors to Australia and Australian's travelling abroad showed substantial growth from April YE 2023 to April YE 2024.
The total number of travellers to Australia increased by over 47%,from 503 million in 2023/23 to 7.8 million in 2023/24.
China saw the highest increase in travellers to Australia with a 314% increase, showing a significant surge in travel from Chinese tourists , followed by Japan and South Korea both with a 139% increase
In a similar trend, the total number of Australian travellers going abroad increased by 40%, from 7.6 million in 2022/23 to 10.5 million in 2023/24.
There has been a significant surge in travel to Japan with a 164% increase in Australian travellers visiting the country, the second largest increase was travel to Vietnam being up 54% on the previous year. India saw the smallest increase of Australian travellers with only a 3.5% increase on the previous year.
Given the increase in travellers in out of Australia the overall growth of the number of passengers being carried by airlines has significant increased reflecting robust growth in the airline industry. Qantas retains its dominant position with the highest number of passengers carried, whilst Cathay also showed a notable increase in passenger numbers from 86,000 passengers carried YE February 2023 to 128,000 passengers carried YE February 2024.
